I was pretty blessed in my childhood. My parents worked hard and sacrificed (a LOT!) so that my brother and I could have everything we needed and most of the things we wanted. One thing I always wanted but wasn't allowed to have was an Ant Farm. It wasn't that my parents didn't want to spend the money, it was that my mom was strongly opposed to the idea of the Ant Farm. No matter what I tried, I could not convince her. She always thought that the ants would get loose in the house. I was an intrepid little kid, though, and not being allowed to have an Ant Farm wasn't going to stop me from having an Ant Farm. Of course, I lacked the resources one might need to construct a proper Ant Farm, so I had to rely on my own ingenuity. Which led to me collecting Tic Tac boxes and filling them with dirt to create the perfect ant environment. And of course, to get the ants, I had to catch the ants. Which ended up being most of the fun.

Being a kid meant that I didn't actually think about the fact that, once the ants were in there without food or water, they would die. So, I didn't have a lot of success with my mini-Ant Farms.

What did you want as a kid that you weren't allowed to have? What did you come up with instead?

  1. I wasn't allowed to have a hampster or a trampoline. So when I was 16 I went out and got a hampster and just brought it home. And I also finally got a trampoline when I was 13, I guess old enough that if I broke something my parents wouldn't feel guilty. I think part of the trampoline thing was that they didn't want to have to watch us all the time. We got rid of it before Cameron got old enough to use it. THis isn't what all those tic tac boxes are for,is it? By the way- SWITCH TO BETA

  2. I am planning to switch, but I've messed up my posts when I moved to the new bloggity.

Also, I remember now that you told me the "teenage rebellion" story with the hamster. It makes me giggle, every time.
