i've been borrowing the internet for a good 6 months now. This usually works out just fine for me. After all, I have some Internets at work and on my phone already. So any Internets I use at home are for entertainment purposes. I'm just using it for looking at things, I think was the phrase I used to explain to the guy why I didn't need to have my own secure connection. I'm sure he thought that by "things" I meant porn. Sadly, I decided that I'd rather have him think that than explain that it's for looking at scrapbooks and blogs. ::sigh::
My borrowed Internet has been missing for 2 days now and you'd think I'm going thru detox if you saw me. I'm all edgy and restless and irritable and hungry. I haven't started puking and shaking yet, but I bet it's coming. So why do I mention all this? Because it's dawning on me how easily we can slip into this sense of entitlement in our lives. After all, it's not my neighbor's job to provide the Internet to me. Heck, the Internet isn't even a right. But man, am I annoyed.

Dude-isn't life, liberty and the pursuit of the information super highway? That's funny because we "borrowed" the internet before we had our own set up, and I would get VERY annoyed if it went away. But when we got ours we were like, "of course we're going to put a block on it, no one's stealing the internet from us!" Ahhh, life's funny. Make sure you drink plenty of water to flush the toxins.

ReplyDeletejust checking to see if anyone's paying attention.
ReplyDeleteI was about to tell you our friendship was on probation
ReplyDeleteYeah, I "borrow" the internet as well. So far it's been pretty consistent, but I think I would die if it stopped working. It's actually a good marketing strategy, kind of like how they give you free cable channels for the weekend or whatever to get you to upgrade. Because if this ever goes away, I'm gonna have to buy it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I would like to think that I will let other people steal it from me when I do that, but who knows.
It's really awesome to have a laptop that is truly a laptop, because I can use it for everything I need without having any wires plugged in anywhere. I love technology!
And I really think the internet is going to start needing to be a right, as more and more things (like government benefits and bills and what not) are becoming unavailable in other mediums. I guess that's why we have libraries. God knows it's not so people can read books!
this is a good point, Rachel. I think that I heard that philadelphia is installing a free wireless world downtown - and later throughout the city. they are installing it in the street lights. free internets everywhere. like manna from heaven. let's all move to philly.
ReplyDeletefunny you mention that, jenn. We have a similar thing here but it's a private group trying to do it all with private benefactors. And it's hotspots instead of a seamless canopy of internets. I was considering doing that at my place in the 'Wood, but it's a bit out of my current price range. But yeah, even the 'Nati is getting there. Oh, the thing is called lilypad. They have a bunch of them downtown already.
