here's that problem i mentioned.

so, things were humming along on the demo phase of the kitchen catastrophe until i uncovered this. the 2 whitish columns on the right side of the photo are heat ducts for the 2nd and 3rd floors. ugh. i'm so mad at myself for missing this during the planning phase. i actually spent several hours at different times looking at everything in the basement that runs into the kitchen area. i must've looked at the elbows for these ducts at least 10 times and i never once thought that they were running right thru the middle of my project. now, as i see it, i have 3 options. 1. cut out a doorway, forget about the pass-thru, and continue, disappointed, with the rest of the project. 2. possibly remove the ducts and replace them with electric baseboard heaters in those rooms. 3. call the HVAC guys to see if these can be re-routed and what it would cost.

none of these make me happy. :-(

  1. You already have received my feedback on this, but I'll provide it again. I think that you should go with the door only option. The other two options are just going to open cans of worms that might be worse than your current situation and might cost $$$$.

But there is another option. You could just leave it like it is. It's sorta rustic looking

  2. Erin,
man this sucks. i would have to see the project to immagine the door only option Rob endorses, but if you do decide to go with the duct moving option, the guy that did our HVAC is AWESOME, and I would be happy to give you his name. I would not say that his prices are low, but I will say that his work is outstanding, that he is a supernice person, and dependable. he really respected our old house and consulted us with every decision.
